The Energy from Waste (EfW) facility is based on conclusions from an intensive public consultation carried out in summer 2007, which addressed how Staffordshire should deal with its growing mountain of household waste. Over 90% of the thousands of respondents, from all walks of life and areas of Staffordshire, supported the idea of moving to Zero Waste to Landfill, maximising recycling and moving to generate more energy from the residual waste.

Staffordshire is being responsible by dealing with a growing problem now to protect the interests of Staffordshire residents today, rather than putting off difficult decisions and storing up problems and costs for the future.

EfW is the popular choice – but the more difficult decision has been about where the new EfW facility should go. A massive amount of research has gone into selecting the site. What is Energy from Waste (EfW)?

The combustion of waste in an EfW facility is a safe, efficient and modern way of treating waste that cannot be reused, recycled or composted. This process generates energy in the form of electricity and/or heat, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and diverting waste away from landfill.
